TYPE: Canon
NAME: Charles Vane
AGE: 35
MOTIVATION: Mainly, freedom. Charles refuses to bow to any man, due to where he comes from, what he's seen in his life, what he's had to fight and get over. He values his freedom over anything else in his life, and will fight - to the death - for it if needs be.
ARRIVAL SCENARIO: The Tear

HISTORY: wiki link

The circumstances of Charles' birth are pretty vague; all that is known is that, as a child, he was taken by a man called Albinus, and forced into slavery. He escaped in his mid-teens and found his way to Nassau, where he quickly became Captain Teach's protege. Teach was the most feared captain on the island, a rough pirate that wouldn't bend to the richer men trying to rule Nassau, and he taught Charles his skills in swordfighting, ship work, and leadership.

However, in his twenties and working under Teach, Charles met Eleanor Guthrie. Just 17, brazen and fearless, he fell for her very fast, and very hard, unable to realize that Eleanor would use him to drive Teach away from Nassau and New Providence Island altogether, allowing her to take a place at the head of the trade on the island in lieu of her father. Teach was the last pirate to resist her, and Eleanor turned every man on his crew against him, the last one being Charles.

Things were calm for a few years after that. Charles established himself as the captain of the Ranger, leading a crew with his quartermaster Jack Rackham, the only ship around Nassau sailing with a woman, Anne Bonny. His relationship with Eleanor was an on-and-off thing, the two of them fighting constantly, but unable to quite quit each other. That is, until Eleanor deposed him as a Captain, banning anyone to sail with him and forbidding any of his prizes to be sold on the island, when he was unable to stop part of his crew from raping Max, a whore with whom Eleanor had a relationship. Stripped of his captaincy and most of his crew, Charles sunk into drugs for a while, before taking off entirely, taking a skiff and going back to his childhood trauma, finding Albinus and his timber business. After an impassioned speech from Charles to Albinus' men, Albinus kills him - or thinks so, anyway, and buries him alive. But Charles comes back, and kills Albinus, gaining the respect of his men in the meantime, and taking them all back with him to Nassau, a whole new crew under his orders.

In Nassau, they take over the Fort defending the bay, making it their new base of operations. They also manage to find an invaluable prize after Charles murders a new Captain that was threatening Eleanor: Abigail Ashe, the daughter of the Carolina colony governor, held hostage in Nassau. Charles keeps her in the Fort, and tells Eleanor so after yet another reunion. But, for reasons conflicting with Charles', Eleanor ends up freeing Abigail from the Fort, furthering the divide between her and Charles.

Charles, in retaliation, murders Eleanor's father. Eleanor promises herself revenge, but gets arrested before she can enact any of it.

Then, he discovers that Jack has managed to secure the Urca de Lima gold, a prize of 5 million Spanish dollars, the chase of which started much of his current strife. Charles, Jack and Captain Flint - the first one to know of the gold - agree between themselves to share the prize, Charles securing and protecting it in the Fort, Jack managing it, and Flint protecting it with the Nassau fleet, in case the Spanish came to collect their lost gold, or England came back to claim their island.

PERSONALITY: Charles is a ruthless man that has known violence his whole life, starting from very young, as a child laborer. Because he was a slave, he is also extremely sensitive to the slave trade and refuses to pursue any slavers for prizes, freeing slaves instead of ever selling them back. He's been seen working alongside slaves on repairs for the Fort, as well.

Just like any pirate, personal gain is one of his main motives, but he is also known for having strong bonds with a few people; Jack, Teach, Eleanor. And while Charles tends to act first, think later - usually with violence - he is also a cunning, intelligent man who's main insecurity is being underestimated. Throughout the series, he grows from an aggressive, cornered captain into a fearless pirate that would do anything to pry Nassau out of England's clutches. He wants Nassau to be free as much as he wants himself to be free, and he knows that this will be his own demise, and isn't afraid of it.

Charles struggles with seeing long-term plans, preferring short-scale ideas that can bring him immediate gain and power instead of a longer play. He does not trust easily and always expects whoever he strikes deals with to try and stab him in the back. He has an extremely volatile temper, and flies off the handle easily. However, he is also very loyal, to his friends and to his name. His name is feared by most captains and crews in Nassau, and Charles is determined to keep it that way. Instilling fear in men means his freedom being more secure.

His recklessness also leads him to sometimes run into action without much thought about consequences, and risking his life repeatedly. He is stubborn enough that he'll defend his choices and stand his ground even when the outcome seems to inevitably lead to his death, and sometimes that of his crew. Some say he's lucky, having defied death a number of times and coming out of top multiple times. But Charles also lives by a set of rules that he's made for himself, one of them being that he refuses to be scared. He truly isn't afraid of death.

Through it all, he isn't all seriousness all the time. He enjoys a bit of fun, usually with ladies, and rum. He enjoys the company of his friends, and people he can go toe to toe with. Charles is one of the very few people in Nassau to realize that, truly, there are no good guys in this town, and he doesn't pretend to be good. But it doesn't mean he doesn't have a strong moral compass, guided by his desire for freedom, for himself and all men.

SKILLS / POWERS: Charles is a very fine swordsman and fighter, very skilled in combat, be it with his bare hands, with swords, or with a pistol. He's also an excellent navigator and a cunning captain.
NERFING: n/a

INVENTORY: his usual outfit of a linen shirt and leather trousers, leather boots, large leather belt in which a dirk is sheathed. He'd also have his rapier, and a small pouch of gold coins attached to the belt.
